PULSES

Laird lentils were developed at the University of Saskatchewan and that allowed Canada's exporters to target markets with a preference for large lentils. These used to be extracted by size grading green lentils and fetched a premium in world markets. Laird is well adapted to most of the lentil producing regions of western Canada, and was instrumental in the development of the large green lentil market.

Eston is a Persian variety of lentil. Eston lentil is small-seeded, matures about 10 days earlier than Laird, and out-yields Laird by about 7%. Eston lentil can be less popular because it is shorter than Laird and is more susceptible to ascochyta blight. Eston lentil is small-seeded and thus is more colorful.

CHICK PEAS

The desi chickpea is smaller in size and has a thicker seed coat that varies in colour from green to purple, brown, tan or black. Desi chickpea cotyledons are pale yellow in colour.

Kabuli chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have a larger, cream-coloured seed with a thin seed coat. The desi type has a smaller, darker coloured seed with a thick seed coat. Included in kabuli chickpea production are the large kabuli type with the seed size mostly 8-9 millimetres (mm) and a seed weight of about 410-490 grams/1000 seed, and the small kabuli type, which have a more uniform seed size of about 7 mm and a seed weight of about 265 grams/1000 seed. Yields of the desi and small kabuli types are about 20% higher than of the large kabuli type.

BEANS
